SPRING 2005

"Awakening the Self Through Sufism"
Wednesday, March 23, 2005, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Thursday, March 24, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Waddell Conference Room, LW113

Presenters: Dr. B. Jalali & Hoorieh Jodiary

The purpose of this seminar was to introduce the audience to the theory and practice of
Sufism. Hazrat Pir Molana Slaheddin Ali Nader Shah Angha, the forty-second master of the Oveysi Shahmaghsoudi School of Sufism in his book Sufism states, "Sufism is the essence of the Prophets' teachings.  It is the way of the Projphets.  It has existed since the beginning of human history, for its seed lies within every human heart....Religion, according to Sufism is the way of human development beyond the physical emotional, intellectual, but also spiritual, which introduces an individual to their true identity. One's true identity is not inherited or acquired through outward experiences, yet it is attained only by uncovering the many layers of veils that one has acquired through interaction with nature and society.  This identity lay depp within the human self. Sufism awakens the individual to such fundamental human questions as: Who Am I? Where Do I Come From? Where Will I Go? Why Am I Here? And unless the most fundamental question of all--Who Am I? is not answered, every other question remains a mystery. It is a saying of Prophet Mohammad who said, "Indeed the one who gets to know himself will know the Creator."

Sufism teaches the individual through intricate and precise instructions to purify his/her body and mind.  And ultimately to purify one's heart in order to be able to enter the spiritual realm, through love and compassion.  According to Sufism, it is love that opens and expands one's consciousness beyond ordinary human understanding.  The way to cognize the truth is through the heart and heart is the place where love is experienced and the passion extends beyond individuality and separation into unity and oneness.
