Please answer each question concisely, but as thoroughly as possible. Please submit your answers typewritten. Prepare no less than one-half page for each answer. A good benchmark would be one typewritten page.
Please include your name on each sheet and staple the pages together or place them in a secured binder. Do not submit the exam with unstapled pages. You must have a cover page for this exam. See the course syllabus for information to be placed on the cover.
Please note that this is an examination. Please prepare your responses with this in mind. You will be penalized for sparsity and unpreparedness, as well as misspelled words or typographical errors. Please do not send me a copy of your exam via e-mail. All exams must be submitted in paper copy in class or by COB on the due date. Make sure you use the textbook and the Related Learning Links page on “Development” on the course website at: www.psyking.net. You may also consult other scholarly sources. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA FOR ANY RESPONSE. Also make sure you cite any sources from which you take information. Each question is worth 10 points each.

1. Contrast the processes of sensation and perception.
2. Distinguish between the senses of taste and smell.
3. Do you think vision is the most important human sense? Why? Is it the dominant sense in all other animals? How is the brain involved in vision?
4. What is deafness? Is it complete hearing loss? What are some of the causes of deafness? Are Americans at risk for deafness? How much noise is too much noise? What can be done to reduce noise levels so that they are not detrimental to us?
5. Describe Gestalt psychology’s contribution to our understanding of perception, including the figure-ground relationship and principles of perceptual grouping in form perception.
6. Describe conception, and outline the course of prenatal development
7. Discuss the possible effects of teratogens on the developing embryo and fetus. Make sure you visit the website on Environmental Causes of Infertility and Miscarriage. You should discuss the maternal and paternal contributions to impacts in the developing fetus. (Website address is listed on the course website, but here it is again: www.chem-tox.com/infertility. You can also download their report for free.
8. Describe the developmental periods of infancy and toddlerhood, childhood, adolescence, young and middle adulthood and mature adulthood. List the developmental milestones important to each.
9. Visit one related learning link on perception that you find interesting. Describe what you found most intriguing about the site and the information provided. What did you learn of significance?
10. What was the most significant information you learned in this segment covering sensation, perception and development? Indicate the reasons why you found it significant and how you will use the information learned.
