Protecting Unborn Babies Against Harm
Does society's interest in protecting an unborn baby justify coercive measures against pregnant women who ingest harmful substances? Should pregnant women who refuse to stop drinking, taking drugs or get treatment be incarcerated until they give birth? The Drug Thalidomide
During the 1950s thousands of babies suffered from gross abnormalities, defects and missing limbs because mothers took the drug, thalidomide during pregnancy. As a result, the use of thalidomide was banned in the United States and some other countries. Now thalidomide has been revived and found to be effective in many illnesses, from mouth ulcers to brain cancer. Do an Internet search and learn about thalidomide and its effects. Should its use for the purposes stated above be permitted even though there is a risk that pregnant women might take it? If so, what safeguards should be required?
