Adolescence
Overview, History and Theoretical Perspectives
Based on your careful reading and review of the lesson on the overview, history and theories
your own theory of adolescent development. Which aspects of the theoretical explanations from
this lesson do you find logical and realistic for you? Provide your reasons why. How do you see
adolescent development being defined in the 21st century?
A Puberty Rites of Passage
The United States is one of the few countries without an official celebration of a rites of passage for youth passing through puberty. Why do you think nonwestern cultures have such clear puberty rites of passage? Why do you think western cultures do not have clear puberty rites of passage? Design a modern day rites of passage ceremony for the youth in our society that would be significant, formal, and meaningful for our youth. Who should be involved?
Adolescence and the Search for Identity
How do you think your own ethncitiy affects your sense of identity? Do you ever think of yourself as being bicultural? Why or why not?
Adolescence and the Importance of Role Models
In your opinion, how important is it to have role models as an adolescent?
Could We Do Without Adolescence?
What is your opinion about this? Do we need adolescence? How would society
need to change if there was no period of adolescence? What would happen to
our society and to the group of people we call adolescents?
Compare and contrast these views with a discussion, description and characteristics
of adolescents today. What’s the same and what’s different? Are the issues different
today? Why, in your opinion? What societal factors or changes contribute to the
differences in issues today and the past? Describe what is it like to be a teen today
in the 21st Century.
Are there cultural variations and differences between teens? What are they?
Poll members of your group that may be from different cultures and ask them to
provide an overview of their teen culture from their ethnic perspective. What are
the differences in cultures? What are the similarities?
Should we continue this developmental period? Why?
Speculate about how our society would change is teenagers were allowed to compete
for jobs with adults on an equal basis. What would be the resulting effects?
FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION
Should the practice of female genital mutilation be allowed in the USA? Would it be better to allow doctors to perform this procedure in this country, rather than having the child taken outside the country? Is this a type of child abuse? Does the USA have the right to prohibit a practice that is seen as part of a culture?
EARLY ONSET OF MENSES (Menarche)
Discuss how nutrition, hormones in food, better health, light exposure, or pheromones from unrelated males might influence early onset of menses. Rank what you think are the most important to least important factors. Discuss how sexual abuse and stepfamilies might add to early menses.
HOW SHOULD PARENTS TALK TO CHILDREN ABOUT SEX?
Look for books, journal articles, magazine articles, newspaper articles, and web sites that discuss the task of talking to children and teens about sex. You and your group will develop a set of brochures that provide parents with suggestions on how to talk to their children and teens about sex. Make sure you cite reference sources in the brochure. Questions to consider include:
How old should my child be when I bring up the topic of sex? Should I wait until my child brings it up first?
What is the typical age for girls and boys to start getting interested in sex?
Just how much should I tell my child?
Should I talk about teen pregnancy? Birth control? Sexually transmitted diseases?
Are there any good books or videos I could give to my child?
What resources are available to give me more information?
HELPING STUDENTS MAKE EDUCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL PLANS
Imagine you are a member of the high school guidance and counseling team. What kind of program would you develop to help students make educational and vocational plans?
PLANNING A FAMILY COUNSEL
You are to discuss holding a family counsel for the purpose of writing some house rules and
corresponding consequences for not adhering to them for your adolescent children. Discuss
and outline what you believe to be the essential ground rules you need to specify for your adolescents.
Also reflect on your time as an adolescent in the process of making your decisions and coming to
a consensus.
ADOLESCENTS AND TECHNOLOGY
How can we make certain that new technologies (e.g., MTV, the Internet, videogames, the
entertainment industry, etc.), combined with the changing family structure doesn’t widen the gap
between adults and teens? Develop a program that would monitor these new technologies and
ensure adult-teen ongoing communication and interaction.
